Neck Pain 5

Back & Neck Pain

Effectively treating back and neck pain is one of the areas for which osteopaths are best known. The good news is that there’s usually a lot we can do to help you – and improve your quality of life – whether it’s a recent problem, or one that’s been troubling you for a while.

As well as helping your symptoms we will work to find and treat the cause of your problem so it’s less likely to reoccur.
Even if you’re relatively symptom-free, we can still check your spine and joints and treat any niggles to help prevent potential problems in the future.

Work 1

Work related pain

Patients consult us for help with a range of work-related issues such as neck and upper back tension, headaches, repetitive strain and lower back pain to mention just a few.
Many of us spend a significant amount of time at work, and the resulting strains eventually take their toll on our bodies. Poor posture, desk work, driving, repetitive actions, heavy lifting or time spent in awkward positions can all contribute to strain, especially if we’re feeling stressed or under pressure.

Osteopaths can assess and treat your problem, speeding up your recovery so you can get back to work more quickly. Once your pain and stiffness has settled, maintenance check-ups can be a good idea to keep your body in good working order. Your osteopath can identify and treat work strains before they build into a bigger problem, keeping you more comfortable and productive.

Sports Injuries

If you’ve picked up a sports injury or even have just a niggling pain or stiffness that isn’t going away, getting it checked is always a good idea. Training or exercising with an injury or imbalance forces your body to overcompensate, which lead to additional problems elsewhere.
Osteopaths assess for imbalances in joints and muscles that can be causing or maintaining injuries. Treatment can help you get back to activity and prevent further strains building up. Many of our patients find that osteopathic treatment helps to keep them flexible and free from pulls and strains – ensuring that they perform better and can continue enjoying the activities of their choice.

Pregnancy 4

Pregnancy

Aches and pains are common during pregnancy as your body tries to adapt to huge postural change in a short period of time. This can take its toll on joints and muscles, leading to discomfort or pain and exacerbating any pre-existing niggles.
Osteopaths have been helping and treating expectant mothers for years and are practiced at using their skills to help relieve aches and pains during pregnancy. Osteopathy is the perfect drug-free option, offering natural, gentle, hands-on-treatment to help your body accommodate the changes taking place, taking strain off problem areas and allowing you to enjoy a more comfortable pregnancy.
Osteopathic treatment can also be helpful in the physically demanding stages of early motherhood when aches and pains are also common.

Osteopathic treatment can ease common pre- and post-natal issues including:

  • Back pain and sciatica
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Muscular tension
  • Groin and hip pain, pelvic and sacroiliac pain
  • Lower abdominal pain or pubic symphysis pain (SPD)

Using gentle techniques, osteopathic care can help restore balance and improve the movement and flexibility of the spine and pelvic girdle. Treatment involves various gentle techniques including soft tissue work, mobilisation and stretching of joints. You may also be given simple home exercises and back care advice.

As you get older

As you get older, the aches and pains that you may start to feel are often dismissed as being an unavoidable part of the ageing process. However, this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case.
At North Beds Osteopaths, we have helped thousands of older people remain active and maintain their quality of life by improving their overall function and flexibility of their joints and spine.
Osteopathic assessment and treatment for patients with osteoarthritis or spondylosis (degeneration in the joints or spine) can help to reduce pain and stiffness and prevent further degeneration by rebalancing the body as much as possible.
This in turn helps you to move better so you can enjoy sport, hobbies or simply spending quality time with your grandchildren.
In some severe cases we may advise that the extent of osteoarthritis is outside our scope of practice and would then refer you on to your GP or another health professional.

Children 3

Children

Osteopaths see children for a wide range of issues and treatment is suitable for all stages of development. We will take full details of your child’s problem, including birth history and general health. During your initial appointment we will also complete a physical osteopathic assessment, which can identify stresses and strains from birth, falls or illnesses that may be affecting how well the body systems are working.
Cranial osteopathy is a safe, gentle and non-manipulative form of treatment that is used when treating babies and young children. Osteopaths are also trained to screen for medical conditions and will tell you if you need to see another health professional such as your doctor or midwife
In accordance with guidance from the Advertising Standards Agency, osteopaths are only allowed to mention helping conditions for which there is large scale data proven by clinical trials. Many osteopathic patients report improvement in other conditions for which there have been no clinical trials. If you would like to discuss whether osteopathy could help your child, please get in touch.
